Chai | חי Jewel pendant

Designed by Lucia LiOr, this original pendant is handmade by #Atelier_db for LiOr Designs, in numbered pieces. Available in bronze, a metal that does not oxidise, or in 925 silver or 24K gold.

The piece, measuring 2.5 x 2 cm, is born from an interpretation by LiOr of the Hebrew word Chai, which means life and consists of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet (from right to left) Chet and Yud.

Chet is represented by LiOr as an elephant, a strong and relatively peaceful animal, as a wish for a long life with good memories. The wrought metal texture recalls the animal's skin.

Yud, on the left, is inspired by a darting fish, as shiny as the surface finishing, a symbol of prosperity and abundance.

The version of the Chai in the main photo is made of bronze, complemented by a silver-gilt 'Rollò' chain, also as on the white mannequin. In the following photos, the Chai worn by M. is pure gold, while the one chosen by G., shown on the black mannequin, is made of silver.

Description

The Animal Kingdom, the world that was created, or came into being (depending on one's beliefs), before the Human Being, in a divine project of collaboration, mutual support and protection of the former by the latter, inspired me a new stylisation of the word Chai, life. In Judaica and the Jewish world in general, it is a very common symbol, especially in jewellery, which is exchanged as a wish for prosperity and well-being.

Curious about these two letters of the alphabet? Gematria, or Jewish numerology, assigns a numerical value to the letters of the alphabet.

In this case, since Chet (on the right) is worth 8 and Yud (on the left) is worth 10, the word Chai therefore takes on the value 18, which is in fact traditionally considered, like its multiples, to be a "good" number.
